The Church at the Foot of Green Mountain written by the late Lynn Stevens

It could have been the artist's brush that placed the immaculately kept white church in the serene setting at the foot of Green Mountain.  Or, it could have been the author's pen, prompting the reader to paint it with the brush of imagination on the canvas of his mind.  The fact is it was placed there by the providence o f God. There it stands-white, pretty, in stark contrast to the rugged terrain of the mountain behind it.  God, in His infinite wisdom, planted Pecan Baptist Church there in  1897. Pecan Baptist Church has always been a Gospel Lighthouse and it still is to this very day.
You know of course, that in spite of its appealing appearance, the building is not the church.  As children we played a little hand game. With palms together and fingers intertwined we said,  "Here's the church," then raising our two index fingers together we said, "and here's the  steeple," we then opened our hands, intertwined fingers sticking up and said, "open it up and here's all the people."  That's the church! It's all the people.
And what good and godly people they are in the church at the foot of Green Mountain--ranchers, school personnel, law enforcement, retirees, and honest, hard-working people in other fields of endeavor.
They are a resolute, hospitable, and God-fearing people of the West Texas variety.  They have stayed up, stayed in, and stuck together through all kinds of times. They have learned to praise God and keep trusting Him in the good times, and to trust Him and keep praising Him in the hard times.  In October of 2006, the sanctuary was destroyed by vandalism and fire, but these precious saints did not sound retreat and give up.  By the grace of God they have built a new and beautiful sanctuary and are going forward doing God's work.
A visit to the church confirms their sincere love for the Lord, their genuine love for one another, and their obvious love for their pastor and his family.  Didn't Jesus say the Great Commandment is 'to love God with all your heart, and the second is to love your brother as yourself?"  And didn't He say, "by this shall all men know that you are my disciples. if you have love for one another.
Pecan Baptist Church is, numerically speaking, a small church.  But they are a fine example of the fact that numbers do not indicate the strength of a church.  It isn't a perfect church, but they are a perfect example of imperfect people working together as they follow the direction of the perfect God.  They are not a rich church, but they have learned that wealth is not measured by the amount of money in the church's treasury, but by the spirit in the hearts of the people.
If you are ever in Coke County near Robert Lee at church time, you will be blessed to visit Pecan Baptist Church--"The Church at the Foot of Green Mountain".  Drive west for 12 miles from Robert Lee on Highway 158, the church is on the left side of the highway.
There will be men wearing Wrangler jeans, boots, and cowboy hats.  The ladies will be neatly dressed, the children will be happy, the spirit of the congregation will be warm and friendly, but best of all, you'll find them meeting with God, and they will want you to join them as they do.
We are told in Scripture to pray for one another.  When you pray again, ask God to bless the continuing ministry of Pecan Baptist Church.
